The Hillbilly Half Book

Sunday March 4th 2012 - On the morning of March 3rd, Emily, my sister Liz, and I ran The Hillbilly Half Marathon. We were the only runners there costumed as hillbillies. Apparently, they just called it The Hillbilly Half Marathon for shits and giggles. In spite of the confusing title (I saw more spandex that morning than I'd seen all year), the run itself was a blast. We were all in pretty good shape, so we were still laughing and joking around by the time we took the first hill of many hills on our ways to the six mile turn around point. I don't know what it was, but once we hit the trail and found it covered in snow, ice, and knee high mud puddles--sometime primal kicked on inside me. I started hooting and hollering, warning Liz and Emily of in-coming puddles, and howling as I spashed through them. A lot of the runners tried to dance around the puddles, but we were "Team Awesome" and we elected to charge straight through. I was often heard calling back to Emily and Liz, "Come on! Are you a deer, or are you elk!"

At the end of the race we got a hillbilly mug, a hillbilly spandex shirt (featured in the shot above), and a bag full of hillbilly half marathon swag, which I used to make your cover from. The side that opens has velcro I found at my grandma's apartment sewn in it as well as one of her old hat bands sewn in to keep the pages from flopping around.

There I am wearing the red flannel I wore on race day. I'm very proud of this production scene. The swag bag works great as a handy book cover/book carrier. I'm sure you will get lots of looks from admirers of The Hillbilly Half Book when you read this in public. I hope you enjoy it. It's definitely one of a kind!

* It also comes with a bonus shot of Emily, Liz, and I after the race with the Olympic hills in the background.
